When the United States hosted the Olympic Games in 1984 it gave them a great opportunity as hosts to display their "soccer" skills to a nation yet to fully embrace the beautiful game.
Sadly, this wasn't to be the case as they went out somewhat harshly in the group stage of the tournament after defeating Costa Rica, drawing with Egypt & narrowly losing to Italy. The American squad was completely domestic based & comprised of players solely from the NASL & Major Indoor Soccer League.
